The Dovado 4GR

The Dovado 4GR Router [rear view]

Introducing the fast and powerful Dovado 4GR

In June 2010, Dovado launched a new mobile broadband router, the 4GR. Like the 3GN and the UMR before it, the Dovado 4GR enables the sharing of your mobile broadband internet connection from your USB modem via standard wireless and ethernet networking. It offers gigabit ethernet (1000Mbps) speeds on its LAN ports and up to 350Mbps WiFi local transfer speeds (802.11n).

A flexible, future-proof mobile broadband router!

  • Gigabit Ethernet interfaces (1000 Mbps) for blazing local transfer speeds, e.g. great for streaming video from PC to Xbox
  • Connects to your mobile broadband via a USB modem.
  • Shares out the single internet connection via standard wireless and/or ethernet networking.
  • Can be used with all the Irish mobile broadband operators (dependent on modem compatibility), anywhere at anytime.
  • Supports the fastest USB modems 3G/HSPA+ (21Mbps!)
  • Automatic link failover (USB to WAN port, WAN port to USB).
  • Your monthly data traffic stats brought to you on the Connection Status Overview bar or by email or text message
  • Can "keep alive" your Internet uptime using the Connection Tracker.
  • Frequent firmware upgrades bringing cool new features and support for additional USB modems.

Control and notifications via SMS

  • Enable SMS functionality (subject to modem support) and get an SMS to alert you of your monthly data consumption.
  • Send short commands from your phone to your 4GR (Restart, Connect, Disconnect, Status)
  • Get SMS notifications of any changes to your Internet connection (including link fail-over).

Additional features

The 4GR has two USB ports so that extra power can be delivered to older modems that require it via a 'Y'-cable, e.g. Huawei E220 and E270. The extra USB port can also be used for home automation and global positioning system (GPS) features.

  • Home Automation using the Tellstick: for example control the lighting or other equipment at home via SMS, WEB and 3rd Party Applications.
  • GPS Tracking/Positioning: for example, you may want to monitor and record the position of your 4GR if installed in a vehicle or canal-boat
  • Wake-on-LAN: you can bring computers out of standby mode via web interface, scheduler or an SMS command.

Hardware Interfaces

  • 2 x USB2.0 ports (for full power to USB modem)
  • 4 x 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet LAN ports
  • 1 x 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet WAN port
  • 802.11b/g/n 300 Mbps WLAN Access Point
  • 100-240VAC, 50/60Hz, power switching adapter
  • 12VDC, 2A input port in 4GR
  • 2 x 3dBi fixed dipole WiFi antennas

Check that your USB modem is supported by the Dovado 4GR

There is a list of supported modems at http://www.dovado.com/modems.

Initial configuration - Access Point Names

When you get your Dovado 4GR, simply insert your USB modem into the USB port on the front and power up the router. Follow the instructions in the User Guide booklet to gain access to the configuration screen from a web browser. The configuration is platform-independent - you can run the initial configuration wizard from Windows, MacOS, Linux or even a wireless-enabled mobile phone or iPod touch.

The only difficult information required by the configuration wizard is the Access Point Name (APN) for your USB modem. In Ireland, the following APNs are in use:

  • 02 - open.internet
  • Three - 3ireland.ie (billpay)
  • Three - 3internet (prepay)
  • Meteor - isp.mymeteor.ie
  • Vodafone - hs.vodafone.ie
  • Vodafone - internet

Ultimately you can discover the correct Access Point Name by viewing the default profile provided with the software that comes pre-installed on the USB modem.
